Bengaluru: Despite the enthusiasm of thousands of youngsters to pursue aviation education, the government, instead of providing necessary facilities, is moving to shut down the aviation training school itself.

The Jakkur Aviation Training School, which was handed over to the Karnataka government by the Maharaja of Mysore with the specific condition that "only an aviation training school must be built," is now facing closure. In a move that violates the original intent and allegedly succumbs to the real estate lobby, the process of shifting the Jakkur school to Mysuru has commenced.

On November 29, 2025, the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports wrote a letter to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) seeking permission to relocate the Government Flying Training School (GFTS) from Jakkur to Mysuru.

Historical Significance:

In 1948, the then Maharaja of Mysore acquired 218 acres of land in Jakkur and constructed the Jakkur Aerodrome. It was inaugurated in December 1948 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The Maharaja handed over the area to the state government specifically to establish a flight training school. Consequently, the Government Flying Training School (GFTS) was established on March 26, 1949. Hundreds of students trained here have become successful pilots. However, since 1997, the institution has been plagued by issues regarding maintenance, shortage of engineers, instructors, aircraft, and fuel. Despite repeated government promises over the years, these problems remain unresolved.

The 25-year-old promise to provide infrastructure for GFTS remains unfulfilled, and the school has now reached the brink of closure.

Expert Opinions:

"I do not understand why the government is relocating GFTS when Bengaluru offers all opportunities, including the scope to extend the runway up to 3,000 feet. If the government supports those dreaming of becoming pilots, hundreds can graduate from here," said Captain Murali Ramakrishna.

Captain Murali, an alumnus of GFTS who now operates three of his own aircraft from Jakkur, added, "There is no doubt that if infrastructure is provided, this can become the best aviation training center in the country. Instead of starting everything from scratch in Mysuru, it is more beneficial to enhance the existing facilities in Jakkur."

A Hub for Helicopters:

The Jakkur airfield is currently used by the Chief Minister and other state dignitaries for helicopter travel. Some private agencies also operate seven-seater aircraft from here. It is alleged that along with closing GFTS, there is a hidden agenda to completely stop all aircraft and helicopter operations from this site.

Currently, the construction of high-rise buildings is prohibited around the Jakkur Aerodrome, and orders have even been issued to demolish some existing large structures. It is suspected that the plan to shut down the airfield is driven by the interests of private builders and a lobby of IAS officers. There are reportedly plans to convert the Jakkur Aerodrome into a sports complex, golf course, or entertainment zone.

Benefit to Students:

Experts suggest that under the education schemes of the Social Welfare Department, pilot training can be provided to SC/ST students at GFTS. Given the high demand for pilot courses, the government could also generate significant revenue.

"Due to the lack of infrastructure for the past five to six years, nearly 75 students enrolled here have received no training. There is no system to provide even three months of continuous education in a two-year course. The government must take note of this and provide all necessary facilities," experts stated.

ಯುವ ಸಬಲೀಕರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಇಲಾಖೆ ವತಿಯಿಂದ ನಾಗರಿಕ ವಿಮಾನಯಾನದ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಿಗೆ 2025ರ ನವೆಂಬರ್‌ 29ರಂದು ಪತ್ರ ಬರೆದು, ಜಕ್ಕೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ತರಬೇತಿ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಿಸಲು ಅನುಮತಿ ಕೋರಲಾಗಿದೆ.

1948ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಕ್ಕೂರಿನ 218 ಎಕರೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಸ್ವಾಧೀನ ಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಅಂದಿನ ಮೈಸೂರು ಮಹಾರಾಜರು, 1948ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ಏರೊಡ್ರಮ್‌ ಅನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರು. 1948ರ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ಜವಹರಲಾಲ್‌ ನೆಹರೂ ಅವರು ಈ ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ತಾಣವನ್ನು ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿದರು. ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ತರಬೇತಿ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಷರತ್ತಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರು ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಹಸ್ತಾಂತರ ಮಾಡಿದರು. 1949ರ ಮಾರ್ಚ್‌ 26ರಂದು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ತರಬೇತಿ ಶಾಲೆ (ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌) ಅನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ  ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಪಡೆದು ನೂರಾರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಪೈಲಟ್‌ಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 1997ರ ನಂತರ ಇದರ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ, ಎಂಜಿನಿಯರ್‌ಗಳು, ಬೋಧಕರು, ವಿಮಾನಗಳು, ಇಂಧನ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಒಂದೊಂದೇ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಉದ್ಭವಿಸಿದವು. ಇದನ್ನು ಸರಿಪಡಿಸುವ ಭರವಸೆ ಅಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ನೀಡುತ್ತಲೇ ಬಂದಿವೆ.

ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ಗೆ ಮೂಲಸೌಕರ್ಯ ಒದಗಿಸುವ 25 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಭರವಸೆ ಹಾಗೇ ಉಳಿದು, ಇದೀಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುವ ಹಂತಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಜಕ್ಕೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ಶಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಿಸಲು ಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. 

‘ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ರನ್‌ವೇಯನ್ನೇ 3000 ಅಡಿಯವರೆಗೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಅವಕಾಶವಿದ್ದರೂ ಸರ್ಕಾರ, ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ ಏಕೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆಯೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಪೈಲಟ್‌ಗಳಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಕನಸು ಹೊತ್ತವರಿಗೆ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಆಸರೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತರೆ ನೂರಾರು ಪೈಲಟ್‌ಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುತ್ತದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಕ್ಯಾಪ್ಟನ್‌ ಮುರಳಿ ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಮುರಳಿಯವರು ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕಲಿತು,  ಪೈಲಟ್‌ ಆಗಿ ಇದೀ ಅವರದ್ದೇ ಮೂರು ವಿಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಿಂದಲೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ‘ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳಿದ್ದೂ, ಮೂಲಸೌಕರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರೆ, ದೇಶದಲ್ಲೇ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ತರಬೇತಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಂಶಯ ಇಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದರು.

‘ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಬದಲು ಜಕ್ಕೂರಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಟ್ಟರು.

 

 

ಹೆಲಿಕಾಪ್ಟರ್‌ಗಳ ತಾಣ

ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಿಂದಲೇ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಪ್ರಮುಖರು ಹೆಲಿಕಾಪ್ಟರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಖಾಸಗಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಏಳು ಆಸನ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯುಳ್ಳ ವಿಮಾನವನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದಲೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ ಮುಚ್ಚುವ ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ವಿಮಾನ, ಹೆಲಿಕಾಪ್ಟರ್‌ಗಳ ಹಾರಾಟವನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಹುನ್ನಾರ ನಡೆಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ಬೃಹತ್‌ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ಈಗಿರುವ ಕೆಲವು ಬೃಹತ್‌ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸಲೂ ಸೂಚಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ, ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನೇ ಮುಚ್ಚಲು ಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಖಾಸಗಿ ಬಿಲ್ಡರ್‌ಗಳ ಒತ್ತಾಸೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಐಎಎಸ್‌ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ಲಾಬಿಯೂ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ. ಜಕ್ಕೂರು ವೈಮಾನಿಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ, ಗಾಲ್ಫ್‌ ಕೋರ್ಸ್‌ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಮನರಂಜನೆ ತಾಣ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನೂ ಹೊಂದಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ.

 

ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲ

‘ಸಮಾಜ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ಇಲಾಖೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಯೋಜನೆಯಡಿ ಪೈಲಟ್‌ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಪರಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಜಾತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಗಡದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಬಹುದು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ಪೈಲಟ್‌ ಕೋರ್ಸ್‌ಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಲಾಭವನ್ನೂ ಗಳಿಸಬಹುದು’ ಎಂದು ತಜ್ಞರು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಟ್ಟರು.

‘ಜಿಎಫ್‌ಟಿಎಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಲಸೌಕರ್ಯಗಳ ಕೊರತೆ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಐದಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ, ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸುಮಾರು 75 ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ತರಬೇತಿಯನ್ನೇ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷದ ಕೋರ್ಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ತಿಂಗಳು ಸತತವಾಗಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ನೀಡುವ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದನ್ನು ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿ, ಎಲ್ಲ ರೀತಿಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಬೇಕು’ ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
