Bengaluru: Citizens have expressed their opposition to the establishment of 'Mini Transfer Station' (MTS) which will reduce the movement of compactors, the problem of liquid waste (leachate), spilling on roads, open areas. Thus, even after three years, only 9 stations are functioning.

Instead of directly transferring wet waste from auto, tipper and handcarts to compactors in the wards, it is collected in MTSs. There the leachate is removed from the wet waste and compacted. The leachate is discharged into the sewers of BWSSB. The waste that should go in four-six compactor trucks is taken out in a couple of trucks. The objective of the project is that there will be no problem of leachate flowing and waste spilling on the road.

MTS can be installed in a space of about one thousand square feet measuring 30x40 feet. There are portable compactors, hook loaders that can be trucked. Five people including one operator, driver, assistant, two security guards each work at this center.

The wet waste collected in the wards is now being transferred to the truck compactors on the road or in some open areas. leachate and dumping of waste in this area is a problem. This will be avoided by MTS. Garbage from auto tippers is transferred to a portable compactor at the MTS centre. There, waste is compacted as well as leachate is discharged. From there, it goes in trucks to the unit for processing, explained Santhosh, Assistant Executive Engineer, Solid Waste Management Department.

MTSs operating at all hours of the day are set up in the same manner. It has a blueprint. Engineer Mahadev said that there will not be any kind of problem for the people around.

For the first phase, 50 MTSs will be set up at a cost of ₹136.06 crore under the Urban Development Grant of the State Government. The total cost of maintaining these for seven years will be ₹256.73 crore.

9 MTS have started outside BBMP. Some are being installed below the flyover. However, where 50 MTS will be established, only 44 have been started to be commissioned. Locals have expressed opposition in 16 areas. Thus, the plan is faltering.

Should be allowed...

'Everybody says don't want to transfer, sort Garbage near their place. So where to do that work? There is also a plan that the waste of each ward should be processed there. However, there is opposition to MTS in many places. Thus, the project is getting delayed," said Dr. Harish Kumar, Special Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Department.

We are starting MTS wherever there is space. A search has been made for the location. Citizens' cooperation is essential. Installation of MTS reduces running of compactors. Allowance should be given," said Parasurama, Joint Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Department.

One thing to say, another thing to do...

There is no opposition to the establishment of MTS. But, they first says something, then does another. So, some are saying no. While waste sorting is being done on the road, liquid waste is going to lakes and gardens. Srinivas, a resident of Uttarahalli, is worried that if this happens in the same way, there will be trouble.
