BENGALURU: The establishment of 'MTS', which is supposed to eliminate the chaos of loading garbage from autos to lorries and reduce the traffic of truck compactors in the city, has not been inaugurated. The machinery there is rusting and the warranty period is also running out.

Machinery costing about one crore has been installed in the MTSs. They have not been commissioned. 10 months pass, if it's a year their warranty will expire. Although everything is ready, wet waste is not coming to MTS.

The wet waste collected from the houses in the wards is collected at the 'Mini Transfer Station' (MTS). There, it is compacted and liquid waste (leachate) is removed. Compacting reduces the traffic of compactors by 40% while transporting from here. Also, the open area including road, lake rise will not be used in case of transfer.

44 MTSs are being set up under BBMP. Out of which 9 are operational. But 10 MTSs have been prepared and have not started even after several month. Each MTS cost ₹1.31 crore. It has been 10 months since the machinery was installed. Although these machines have reached a rusting level, they are not operational due to local opposition. MTSs in Shantalanagar, Koramangala, Gandhinagar have not started functioning even after few months of inauguration.

 Delay by the people's representatives...

Although the MTSs have been established, the people's representatives, political leaders are against their operation. In order to facilitate their followers, MTS is not allowing the operation of more compactors for the benefit of the contractors. But it is said that as it was stopped due to the opposition of the local people said, Rameshappa, a resident of Koramangala.

 Immediate action...

Mini transfer stations are being set up as per the instructions of the central government. These are very useful in garbage transfer. Their implementation is essential. Waste management is systematic with operation of MTSs at around 9 places. Some MTS are not started due to some local reasons. Harish Kumar, Special Commissioner of BBMP Solid Waste Management Department said that immediate action will be taken in this regard.

Impact on Swachha Survekshan marks!

'Waste to wealth' – the main mission of 'Swachha Survekshan 2023'. Its purpose is to systematically collect the garbage, process it and recycle the proceeds to the city itself. This time there are 4,525 points from waste collection, transportation to processing. Thus, 'mini transfer' centers that collect garbage cleanly, avoid leachate and reduce compactor movement are very important. If these are not operational it will affect the Swachha Survekshan marks. Last time a lot of points were lost due to negligence of BBMP. Environment activist Ramprasad said that failure should not happen in 2023.
