Citizens are not interested to become FRIENDS OF THE LAKE!

Technical problem in BBMP registration process; Uncompensated staff

Citizens are not interested to become FRIENDS OF THE LAKE! (KERE MITRA)

Kere Manjunath ಕೆರೆ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ್

Bengaluru: Citizens have not shown much interest in becoming 'KERE MITRA' and 'HASIRU MITRA' to monitor the maintenance of lakes and gardens under BBMP.

Hundreds of people tried to register to become 'Kere Mitra' and 'Hasir Mitra'. However, they were unable to register due to a technical problem. Thus, only 1,158 were registered by the last day, 30 A.M.

The BBMP informed that 10 people will be randomly selected from those who have registered their names and given the opportunity to monitor the lake or garden for a month as 'KERE MITRA' and 'HASIRU MITRA'.

 Confusion in the list itself:

It is officially stated that there are 202 lakes under the jurisdiction of BBMP. However, only 168 lakes of 198 wards are in the process of registration to become 'Kere Mitra'. ₹35 crore is being spent on maintenance of 174 lakes. However, there was no opportunity here to 'friend' the lakes.

At least 2,020 citizens should be registered to become 10 'Kere Mitras' for each of the 202 lakes in the city. However, only a quarter of this has been registered. Further, there are 1,030 gardens in 198 wards. 10,300 citizens are required to become 'green allies' each to monitor these. 5% of the public is registered.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had promised citizens in the 'Brand Bangalore Conference' about maintenance of lakes and gardens. Accordingly, 'Kere Mitra' and 'Hasiru Mitra' schemes were started. However, citizens are complaining that BBMP has failed to develop the necessary technology.

 'Registration re-opened'

One had to register to become a 'Kere Mitra' and a 'Hasiru Mitra'. But there are some technical problems. As a result, not many registered. More time will be given. Registration period will be extended. Citizens will be informed about this soon," said Priti Gehlot, Special Commissioner, BBMP Kere, Horticulture Department.

 'No registration required for promotion'

If lakes and parks are reserved for civil works only, and if they are being made ``Kere Mitra'' and ``Hasiru Mitra'' to gain publicity by getting citizens' stamp on it, it is better to stop it here. Lake management means there should be quality water, clean environment, good quantity of clean water. Without emphasizing these works, it is not right for us to look at the works decided by them. Many people are interested in becoming a 'Kere Mitra'. But, technically this is not possible. "No one is interested in solving the problem," complained Ramprasad of Friends of Lakes.

'Corporation staff don't like it'

BBMP staff do not like public to become 'Lake Mitra' and 'Green Mitra'. That's why not much publicity was given about this project. From A.19 when the registration was allowed, the link was not available on the website first, then it was not opening. Then there was no list of lakes. Even though the registration page was closed, the information about whether the registration was done or not was not available. At least not a single message to mobile or email. From the special commissioner of lakes and horticulture department to the chief engineer and executive engineer, there is no time to give information. One puts the responsibility on the other' said environmental activist T.E. Srinivas alleged.

652 have registered to become KERE MITHRA

Parks under 1020 BBMP

506 have registered to become HASIRU MITRA

Kere Manjunath ಕೆರೆ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ್

Bengaluru: Projects in BBMP are falling through the cracks due to lack of funding for works. However, even after two years since the grant was released by the Union Government, the development of the parks has been forgotten. The 'Green Cover Growth' scheme has been neglected.

A grant of ₹19.53 crore has been released to BBMP Horticulture Department for the year 2020-21 by the Union Government. The purpose of this grant is to increase the green cover in the city by planting new trees in the Parks, development works, and by planting trees on the roads median. BbMp completed the tender process for this projects and received the grant. But works are not started.

₹ 10.67 crore in central grant for the development of 20 parks and the tender has been finalized. A cost of ₹6.32 crore will be allocated for planting and nurturing saplings at the median of 15 roads in the city. Don't let dry: T. E. Srinivas

'BBMP spends crores on parks' But, their management is not done properly. Plants are not just planted, they must be nurtured until they become trees. Don't let the plants dry out, nurture them. Ornamental plants should be reduced in the parks, insisted, T.E.Srinivas, an environmental activist from Rajarajeshwari Nagar.

Waiting for State Government approval

The tender process for the park development works with the grant of the central government has been completed. The information has been submitted to the state government, and as soon as the consent is received from there, the job code will be given and the work order will be given," said Chandrasekhar, Deputy Director of Horticulture Department, BBMP.

10 Miyawaki Forest

There is a plan to develop 10 Miyawaki forests around the city, each of which will be planted with 1,000 to 5,000 trees. There is space in Bommanahalli and Mahadevpur area and this project will be started in few months. The objective of this project is to increase the green area in and around the city. A feature of the Miyawaki Forest is the dense growth of trees in a small space. It will be developed according to the local climate," said Chandrasekhar, Deputy Director, Horticulture Department, BBMP.

11 new Parks in BBMP

South zone with green area extended; Greening of encroachment clearance places

Kere Manjunath, 10 January 2023

Bengaluru: Bengaluru, once known as the Garden City, is now noticeably increasing its green area. 11 new parks are under construction are adding to existing list of 1,233 parks covered by BBMP. Bengaluru South zone has got the highest share in this and has gained the first position by expanding the green area.

Bengaluru Development Authority constructed Civic Amenity (CA) sites in Padmanabhanagar, Basavanagudi, K.R.Pura and transferred to BBMP. But this area was occupied by private individuals. These areas, which were in the midst of residential areas, were in court. The case has been going on for many years and recently the verdict has come. Soon after this verdict, the BBMP, which woke up, cleared all encroachments and started construction of a garden/ park there.

In 11 encroached cases, 11 gardens are being constructed in an area of about 21 acres. About ₹35 crore is being spent on the construction of these gardens/ parks. First of all fencing work, exercise equipment, children's play equipment, footpath, seating, gazebo and LED lights are being installed in these gardens.

These gardens are being built with the grant given under the Chief Minister Amrita Urban Development Scheme and the MLA's grant. Art works are being installed in the garden of Padmanabhanagar under the concept of 'Make in India'. Community Bhavan is being constructed in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Garden which has already been inaugurated.

"These areas, which were classified by the BDA, were encroached. Some cases have been in court since 1998. A couple of gardens were constructed by the BDA and entrusted to the Corporation. Areas handed over by BDA as designated CA site for gardens are also encroached. With these cases in court, a lot of efforts were made to get them into custody in the last one year. This area came under the control of BBMP due to the efforts of law department. We are immediately clearing the encroachment and constructing a park," said Mahantesh, Executive Engineer of BBMP South Zone.

Minister R. Ashoka, MLA Ravisubramanya has been allocated in the MLA fund and construction of the garden is going on at a fast pace, he said.

More gardens...

There are also plans to build more parks under BBMP. The spaces available for this are being identified. Gardens are built wherever space becomes available. Apart from this, development and upgradation works are also going on in more than 25 gardens.

The place of occupation cannot be left for a long time. So parks are being built to make green space
