The mist is beginning to fall again. The snow is painting the green trees white, and the silvery hills are turning the sun's light into golden rays. The biting cold offers a delightful stage for tourists to savour the natural beauty, yet the shadow of fear has not lifted. The sound of gunfire and the lament of women who lost their husbands still echo in the ears of the locals. Into this stagnant Pahalgam, hundreds of hearts from Karnataka offered solace, igniting a ray of hope...

The mention of Pahalgam immediately brings to mind the tragic incident of April 22, 2025. On that day, the entire nation wept as 26 innocent people were gunned down. The brazen act of terror against harmless tourists in front of their wives and children still makes one's blood boil. The valley of Pahalgam, plunged into anxiety by the horror of that day, still trembles, unable to fully emerge from the trauma.

Even after seven months, Pahalgam, devastated by the extremists' outrage, has not recovered. The livelihood of its approximately 13,000 residents is primarily dependent on tourism. Although weaving is a major occupation, it requires buyers once the products are made, doesn't it? Such tourists are now extremely rare. Consequently, the residents of Pahalgam have not received any economic boost.

Into this atmosphere of anxiety, the people of Karnataka offered comfort to the residents of Pahalgam. They hoisted the yellow and red Karnataka flag amidst the icy spray, showcased the beauty of the Karnataka Rajyotsava (State Festival), and paid homage to the deceased souls. They loudly proclaimed that they had come to revitalise the spirits of Pahalgam's residents, who depend on tourism. All this happened on November 22. Seven months prior, on this very date, guns had roared there. But on the same date seven months later, a bright ray of hope shone in that place.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority – City Corporations Officers' and Employees' Welfare Association celebrated this year's Karnataka Rajyotsava in Pahalgam. "The plane, which was supposed to land in Srinagar, Kashmir, at the time of the terrorist attack, did not land there. It took us elsewhere. That's when our plan changed. We decided that Kannadigas should pay tribute to the dead by celebrating Karnataka Rajyotsava in Pahalgam, where the extremists had carried out their heinous attack," said A. Amritraj, the association's president, his eyes gleaming. "After six months of effort, the strength of Karnataka, Kannada, and Kannadigas was unveiled in Pahalgam, and the event was a success." His expression reflected the satisfaction of having countered the extremists and sown the seeds of hope for tourism among the local people.

It is true that celebrating Karnataka Rajyotsava—a festival of joy for Kannadigas—outside Karnataka, about three thousand kilometres away from Bengaluru, in an area where the Kannada language's flavour is unknown, and that too on the country's border, is an adventure. For such a celebration, Kannadigas needed to be present in Pahalgam. That's why Amritraj formulated a plan. He issued a circular stating that City Corporation staff and their families could attend the Karnataka Rajyotsava in Pahalgam, with a Kashmir tour included. Pahalgam, ravaged by the fear of extremists, had instilled anxiety not only in locals but also in tourists. In such a situation, who would be ready to visit Pahalgam? But let it be known that the first ones to step forward to go to Pahalgam were the women. The female staff of the City Corporations, along with their children, volunteered to participate in the Karnataka Rajyotsava and paid the necessary fees. Gradually, men also stepped forward. Ultimately, over 400 people gathered for the Karnataka Rajyotsava in Pahalgam.

The Pahalgam Club & Convention Centre—a club of the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC)—has over 30 rooms and is a resort-like facility. This is the very club where the bodies of the 26 victims of the April 22 attack were kept. It is also the very club where Kannadigas offered homage to the deceased alongside celebrating the Karnataka Rajyotsava. "When the plan to celebrate Karnataka Rajyotsava and pay tribute to the dead in Pahalgam was conceived, we decided the event had to take place at the 'Pahalgam Club & Convention Centre.' For this, we obtained permission from everyone, including the President, Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Army Chief, and Police, through letters and emails," Amritraj said. These words echoed repeatedly as the stage, radiating a Kannada atmosphere, was unveiled in the club premises. This was because holding an event at such a location was not an easy task. That is why the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) of Pahalgam, Farooq Ahmed, and Inspector Parvez Ahmed, along with their teams, stood as a security fortress for the Kannada event.

Standing in the compound of the Pahalgam Club & Convention Centre, the Baisaran Valley, where the extremists carried out their atrocity, is visible at a short distance. Three valleys can be seen amidst the tall pine trees. Baisaran Valley is among them. Vehicles cannot reach that valley; one must go by horseback. Currently, no one is allowed within a 6 km radius of that valley. Thus, the road leading there is enveloped in a deathly silence. The stage for the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebration was set up to the left of this valley, on the banks of the Lidder River. The event began at 4 PM on the evening of November 22. Kannada songs had been playing over the speakers since the morning. The start of the musical performance by playback singer Anuradha Bhat enhanced the audience's delight. To the murmuring of the Lidder River and the bone-chilling 2-degree Celsius cold, Anuradha Bhat lent her voice to songs celebrating the Kannada spirit of veteran actors like Dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, and Shankar Nag. Even in the misty environment, the song Huttidare Kannada Nadalli Huttabeku (If born, one should be born in the Kannada land) made the audience dance. The auditorium was illuminated during Puneeth Rajkumar’s Bombe Helutaithe song from the movie Rajakumara, with everyone's mobile torches twinkling. Along with Bombe Helutaithe, she entertained the crowd with many other songs about the language. The state anthem, Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate, at the start and the national anthem at the end, heightened the purpose and celebration of the event.

The culture of Karnataka was showcased at the Rajyotsava celebration in Pahalgam through the Dollu Kunita (drum dance) and Yakshagana performances. Despite the bone-chilling cold, where everyone wore sweaters, caps, gloves, and jackets, they preferred to sit near the heaters placed in the auditorium. Even in the 2-degree Celsius temperature, the Dollu Kunita team did not compromise on their costumes. Chandru's team, in their usual attire that left their hands and feet visible, played the drums, danced, and made everyone stand on their toes. All the dignitaries were welcomed with the Kannada flag and seated on the stage. The main purpose of the Rajyotsava was to pay homage and tribute to the departed. The well-organised two-and-a-half-hour program also held the fervent desire for tourism to flourish again in Pahalgam. The applause was resounding when it was stated that, without fear of anyone, "we are safe here under the protection of our soldiers and police. The presence of hundreds of people here to hold this event is proof of this." Compliments poured in not only from the Kannadigas but also from the residents of Pahalgam who helped set up the stage and the police who provided security.

"There was a lot of anxiety before coming to Pahalgam. Family and friends asked why we were going there, saying it wouldn't be safe. But after coming here, we realised that the arrangements and security here are excellent. Let our program be a message to tourists. We hope a large number of tourists will come to behold the natural beauty. We wish this area, which relies on tourism, will once again become a tourist paradise, and we share our feeling of safety with those who told us not to go," said the speakers on the stage, igniting a ray of hope for the people of Pahalgam, who depend on tourism.

🍲 Cooking in the Biting Cold

When over 400 Kannadigas arrived in Pahalgam from Bengaluru for the event, shouldn't the meals also reflect the flavour of Karnataka? Yes, they absolutely had to. That is why the Greater Bengaluru Authority – City Corporations Officers' and Employees' Welfare Association brought cooks from Karnataka. Although cooking in the biting cold was a new experience, they served the taste of Karnataka in Pahalgam with Upma, Idli, Chutney, Sambar, Poori, Saagu, Pulav, Saaru, Rasam, and even Mudde (ragi balls). Water is essential for cooking, but here, touching water is difficult. Hands would freeze while washing rice and vegetables. That's why everything here was done with hot water. The cooking staff even used it to wash the utensils. Amidst the generator smoke, they would periodically warm themselves up with the heat and continue the task of cutting vegetables. Despite the shiver-inducing atmosphere, they served delicious food.

The tourist season in Kashmir generally begins in mid-December, when the roads are covered in snow, and the temperature drops to minus degrees. November is only the beginning of winter. Still, the -6 degree Celsius cold at night in Pahalgam made the Kannadigas shiver. No matter how many sweaters and jackets were worn, the body wouldn't warm up. The body heat would plume out as smoke from the mouth. Such weather is delightful, and experiencing it once is certainly worthwhile. Those who initially despaired, thinking they couldn't possibly stay there or bathe, found that the atmosphere embraced them after a day. With a renewed spirit, they set out to savour the beauty of nature. Fingers would briefly emerge from gloves to slide on a mobile screen, capturing the white hills through the camera lens.

After savouring all this beauty of Pahalgam and taking a selfie on the banks of the Lidder River with the inscription "I Love Pahalgam," the "Baisaran Martyrs Memorial" nearby catches the eye. The eyes well up. After paying homage and bidding farewell to Pahalgam, the heart feels heavy. A hope arises that when one returns another day, Pahalgam will be immersed in the joy of tourists. "Really, I love Pahalgam..."

ಮತ್ತೆ ಮಂಜು ಬೀಳಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ, ಹಸಿರು ಹೊತ್ತ ಮರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಿಮ ಬಿಳಿಯ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿಯುತ್ತಿವೆ, ಶ್ವೇತಮಯ ಗುಡ್ಡಗಳು ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಿರಣಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಮೈ–ಕೈ ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿ, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸವಿಯಲು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೆ ಆಹ್ದಾದಕರ ವೇದಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ ಆತಂಕದ ಛಾಯೆ ಕರಗಿಲ್ಲ, ಗುಂಡಿನ ಶಬ್ದ, ಸಿಂಧೂರವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ಆರ್ತನಾದ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಗುಯ್‌ಗುಟ್ಟಲೇ ಇದೆ.. ಇಂತಹ ಮಡುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ಗೆ ನೂರಾರು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಹೃದಯಗಳು ಸಾಂತ್ವನ ಹೇಳಿ, ಭರವಸೆಯ ಆಶಾಕಿರಣವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದವು....

ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಎಂದ ಕೂಡಲೇ 2025ರ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್‌ 22ರಂದು ನಡೆದ ಘಟನೆ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆ ಹಾದುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದು, ಯಾವ ತಪ್ಪೂ ಮಾಡದ 26 ಮಂದಿಯ ಎದೆಗೆ ಗುಂಡಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಇಡೀ ದೇಶವೇ ರೋಧಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಪತ್ನಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಅಮಾಯಕ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಮೇಲೆ ಉಗ್ರರ ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ನೆನದು ರಕ್ತ ಕುದಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದಿನ ದಿನದ ಭೀಕರತೆಗೆ ಆತಂಕದ ಛಾಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಕಣಿವೆ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಅದರಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರಲಾರದೆ ನಡುಗುತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಉಗ್ರರ ಆರ್ಭಟಕ್ಕೆ ತತ್ತರಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಏಳು ತಿಂಗಳಾದರೂ ಇನ್ನೂ ಮೈಕೊಡವಿ ಎದ್ದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸುಮಾರು 13 ಸಾವಿರ ಜನರ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಪಾಡು ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮದ ಮೇಲೇ ಅವಲಂಬಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ನೇಯ್ಗೆ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಾದರೂ, ಅದು ಉತ್ಪನ್ನವಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರು ಬೇಕಲ್ಲವೇ? ಅಂತಹ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗಳು ಇತ್ತ ಸುಳಿಯುವುದು ತೀರಾ ವಿರಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ, ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ

ಇಂತಹ ಆತಂಕದ ಛಾಯೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಜೀವನ ಸವೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳು ಸಾಂತ್ವಾನ ಹೇಳಿದವು. ಇಬ್ಬನಿಯ ಸಿಂಚನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳದಿ–ಕೆಂಪು ಬಣ್ಣದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬಾವುಟವನ್ನು ಹಾರಿಸಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಸೊಬಗನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಿ, ‘ಮಡಿದ ಆತ್ಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದವು. ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನೇ ನೆಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಮನಸ್ಸುಗಳಿಗೆ ಚೇತನ ನೀಡಲು ನಾವು ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಸಾರಿ ಸಾರಿ ಹೇಳಿದವು. ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ನಡೆದದ್ದು ನವೆಂಬರ್‌ 22ರಂದು. ಏಳು ತಿಂಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಇದೇ ದಿನ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದೂಕುಗಳು ಆರ್ಭಟಿಸಿದ್ದವು. ಆದರೆ, ಅದೇ ಏಳು ತಿಂಗಳ ಅದೇ ದಿನ, ಭರವಸೆಯ ಆಶಾಕಿರಣ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾನವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಗ್ರೇಟರ್ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರಾಧಿಕಾರ– ನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಗಳ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ– ನೌಕರರ ಕ್ಷೇಮಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಂಘ ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚರಿಸಿತು. ‘ಉಗ್ರರ ದಾಳಿಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರದ ಶ್ರೀನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಿದ್ದ ವಿಮಾನ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೇರೆಡೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯಿತು. ಆಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಯೋಜನೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಕಿಚ್ಚು ಹುಚ್ಚೆಬ್ಬಿಸಿ, ಉಗ್ರರು ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಆಚರಿಸಿ, ಮಡಿದವರಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಆರು ತಿಂಗಳ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ, ಕನ್ನಡ, ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಂಡು, ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಗಳಿಸಿತು’ ಎಂದು ಸಂಘದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಎ. ಅಮೃತ್‌ರಾಜ್‌ ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಅವರ ಕಣ್ಣಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಳಪಿತ್ತು. ಉಗ್ರರಿಗೆ ಎದಿರೇಟು ನೀಡಿ, ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಚಿಗುರುವ ಕನಸು ಬಿತ್ತಿದ ತೃಪ್ತಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

ನಿಜ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಹೊರಗೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ಮೂರು ಸಾವಿರ ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ, ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷಾ ಸೊಗಡನ್ನು ಅರಿಯದ, ಅದೂ ದೇಶದ ಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವುದು ಸಾಹಸವೇ ಸರಿ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಸಂಭ್ರಮ. ಅಂತಹ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೇ ಇರಬೇಕಲ್ಲವೇ? ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಅಮೃತ್‌ರಾಜ್ ಅವರು ಯೋಜನೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಗಳ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರು ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಬಹುದು. ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರ ಸುತ್ತಾಟವೂ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಸುತ್ತೋಲೆ ಹೊರಡಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಉಗ್ರ ಭೀತಿಯಿಂದ ನಲುಗಿಹೋಗಿದ್ದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್, ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರಿಗಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಲ್ಲೂ ಆತಂಕ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಇಂತಹ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ತಾನೇ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ಗೆ ಬರಲು ಸಜ್ಜಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ ಹೇಳಿ. ಆದರೆ ಇದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿರಲಿ, ಈ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ಗೆ ಹೊರಡಲು ಮೊದಲು ಮುಂದಾಗಿದ್ದೇ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು. ನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಗಳ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾಗಲು ಮುಂದಾದರು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ಶುಲ್ಕವನ್ನೂ ಭರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮೇಣ, ಪುರುಷರೂ ಮುಂದಾದರು. ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ 400ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಂದಿ ಸಮಾವೇಶಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.

ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ ಆ್ಯಂಡ್‌ ಕನ್ವೆಂಷನ್‌ ಸೆಂಟರ್‌– ಇದು ಜಮ್ಮು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ನಿಗಮದ (ಜೆಕೆಟಿಡಿಸಿ) ಕ್ಲಬ್‌. ಅಂದರೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 30ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕೊಠಡಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಇದು ಬರೀ ಹೋಟೆಲ್‌ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಒಂದು ರೆಸಾರ್ಟ್‌ ಮಾದರಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ಇದೆ. ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ 22ರಂದು ಉಗ್ರರ ದಾಳಿಗೆ ಬಲಿಯಾದ 26 ಮಂದಿಯ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಇರಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇದೇ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ. ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮೃತದಾರದವರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದೂ ಇದೇ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನಲ್ಲೇ. ‘ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಹಾಗೂ ಮೃತರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಯೋಜನೆ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡಾಗ ‘ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ ಆ್ಯಂಡ್‌ ಕನ್ವೆಂಷನ್‌ ಸೆಂಟರ್’ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವಾಗಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆವು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿ, ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ, ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ, ಸೇನಾ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರು, ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಪತ್ರ ಬರೆದು, ಇ–ಮೇಲ್‌ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಅನುಮತಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದವು’ ಎಂದು ಅಮೃತ್‌ರಾಜ್‌ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು, ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ನ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಪ್ರಸರಿಸುವ ವೇದಿಕೆ ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ಕಂಡಾಗ ಮೇಲಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗುಯ್‌ಗುಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಅಂತಹ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ನಡೆಸುವುದು ಅಷ್ಟು ಸುಲಭದ ಮಾತಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಕ್ಕೇ, ಪಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನ ಡಿವೈಎಸ್ಪಿ ಫಾರೂಕ್ ಅಹಮದ್, ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಪೆಕ್ಟರ್ ಪರ್ವೇಜ್ ಅಹಮದ್ ಅವರು ಸ್ವತಃ ತಮ್ಮ ತಂಡದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಭದ್ರಕೋಟೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದರು. 

ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಕ್ಲಬ್‌ ಆ್ಯಂಡ್‌ ಕನ್ವೆಂಷನ್‌ ಸೆಂಟರ್‌ನ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಉಗ್ರರು ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸ ಮೆರೆದ ಬೈಸರನ್‌ ಕಣಿವೆ ಆಣತಿ ದೂರದಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೃಹತ್‌ ಎತ್ತರದ ಪೈನ್‌ ಮರಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಮೂರು ಕಣಿವೆಗಳು ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿರುವೇ ಬೈಸರನ್‌ ಕಣಿವೆ. ಆ ಕಣಿವೆಗೆ ವಾಹನಗಳು ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಕುದುರೆ ಸವಾರಿಯಿಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು. ಆ ಕಣಿವೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲು 6 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗ ಯಾರನ್ನೂ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಸಾಗುವ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಸ್ಮಶಾನಮೌನ. ಈ ಕಣಿವೆಗೆ ಎಡಭಾಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಲಿದ್ದರ್‌ ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಆಚರಿಸುವ ವೇದಿಕೆ ಸಜ್ಜಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನವೆಂಬರ್‌ 22ರ ಸಂಜೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಆರಂಭ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಗೀತೆಗಳು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊಳಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಗಾಯಕಿ ಅನುರಾಧಾ ಭಟ್‌ ಗಾನಸುಧೆ ಆರಂಭವಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಭಿಕರ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಮೆರುಗು ತಂದಿತು. ಲಿದ್ದರ್‌ ನದಿ ಝುಳುಝುಳು ನಿನಾದದೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಎರಡು ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ಸೆಲ್ಷಿಯಸ್‌ನ ಮೈನಡುಗುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್‌, ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನ್‌, ಅಂಬರೀಶ್, ಶಂಕರನಾಗ್‌ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಿರಿಯ ನಟರ ಕನ್ನಡಭಿಮಾನದ ಗೀತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನುರಾಧಾ ಭಟ್‌ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಂಜಿನ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲೂ  ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಬೇಕು ಗೀತೆ ಸಭಿಕರನ್ನು ಕುಣಿಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಪುನೀತ್‌ ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರ ‘ರಾಜಕುಮಾರ’ ಚಿತ್ರ ‘ಬೊಂಬೆ ಹೇಳುತೈತೆ..’ ಗೀತೆಗೆ ಇಡೀ ಸಭಾಂಗಣ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾನವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮೊಬೈಲ್‌ಗಳ ಟಾರ್ಚ್‌ ಮಿನುಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. , ಬೊಂಬೆ ಹೇಳುತೈತೆ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಭಾಷೆ ಬಗೆಗಿನ್ ಹಲವು ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿ ರಂಜಿಸಿದರು. ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಯ ಭಾರತ ಜನನಿಯ ತನುಜಾತೆ… ನಾಡಗೀತೆ, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಗೀತೆ ಸಮಾರಂಭದ ಉದ್ದೇಶ, ಸಂಭ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಲುಮುಟ್ಟಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ಡೊಳ್ಳು ಕುಣಿತ ಹಾಗೂ ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಮೂಲಕ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಮೈ–ಕೈ ನಡುಗುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಸ್ವೆಟರ್‌, ಟೋಪಿ, ಗ್ಲೌಸ್‌, ಜಾಕೆಟ್‌ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ, ಸಭಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ‘ಹೀಟರ್’ ಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂತಹ 2 ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ಸೆಲ್ಷಿಯಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲೂ ಡೊಳ್ಳು ಕುಣಿತದ ತಂಡ ತನ್ನ ವೇಣಭೂಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಚಂದ್ರು ಅವರ ತಂಡ, ಎಂದಿನಂತೆಯೇ ಕೈ–ಕಾಲು ಕಾಣುವಂತಹ ದಿರಿಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಡೊಳ್ಳು ಬಾರಿಸಿದರು, ಕುಣಿದು ಕುಪ್ಪಳಿಸಿದರು, ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ತುದಿಗಾಲ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಬಾವುಟದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗಣ್ಯರನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಿ, ಕರೆತಂದು ವೇದಿಕೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂರಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಮಡಿದವರರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಂಜಲಿ, ನುಡಿನಮನವನ್ನೂ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದೇ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಗಂಟೆ ನಡೆದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ, ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಮತ್ತೆ ಚಿಗುರಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಒತ್ತಾಸೆಯೂ ಇತ್ತು. ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಬೆದರದೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸೈನಿಕರು, ಪೊಲೀಸರ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವೆಲ್ಲೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ನೂರಾರು ಜನರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ನಡೆಸಿರುವುದೇ ಇದಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ ಕರತಾಡನವಿತ್ತು. ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರದ್ದು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ವೇದಿಕೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು, ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಪೊಲೀಸರಿಂದಲೂ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಯಿತು. 

‘ಪಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್ ಗೆ ಬರುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಆತಂಕವಿತ್ತು. ಕುಟುಂಬದವರು, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಏಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೀರಿ? ಸುರಕ್ಷೆ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ, ರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಕಾರ್ಯ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಮನದಟ್ಟಾಯಿತು. ನಮ್ಮ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೆ ಸಂದೇಶವಾಗಲಿ. ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಲಿ. ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನೇ ನಂಬಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಮತ್ತೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಆಶಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಮಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಡಿ ಎಂದವರಿಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಸುರಕ್ಷಿತ ಭಾವವನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ’ ಎಂಬ ವೇದಿಕೆ ಮೇಲಿದ್ದವರ ಮಾತು, ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನೇ ನಂಬಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಆಶಾಕಿರಣ ಮೂಡಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ಮೈಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡುಗೆ

ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ 400ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ಗೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಊಟೋಪಚಾರವೂ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸೊಬಗಿನಂತೆಯೇ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಲ್ಲವೇ? ಹೌದು, ಇರಲೇಬೇಕು. ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಗ್ರೇಟರ್ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರಾಧಿಕಾರ– ನಗರ ಪಾಲಿಕೆಗಳ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ– ನೌಕರರ ಕ್ಷೇಮಾಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸಂಘ ಅಡುಗೆಯವರನ್ನೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಿಂದಲೇ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿತ್ತು. ಮೈಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡುಗೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಹೊಸ ಅನುಭವವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಉಪ್ಪಿಟ್ಟು, ಇಡ್ಲಿ, ಚಟ್ನಿ, ಸಾಂಬಾರು, ಪೂರಿ, ಸಾಗು, ಪುಲಾವ್‌, ಸಾರು, ರಸಂ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮುದ್ದೆಯ ರುಚಿಯನ್ನೂ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಡಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಅಡುಗೆ ಎಂದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ನೀರು ಬಹುಮುಖ್ಯ. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರಿಗೆ ಕೈಚಾಚುವುದೇ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಅಕ್ಕಿ, ತರಕಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆಯುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೈ ಮರಗಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಬಿಸಿ ನೀರು. ಅದರಿಂದಲೇ ಪಾತ್ರೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ತೊಳೆಯುವ ಕಾಯಕವನ್ನು ಅಡುಗೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ನಡೆಸಿದರು. ಜನರೇಟರ್‌ನ ಹೊಗೆಯ ಮಧ್ಯೆಯೂ ಆಗಾಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಶಾಖವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಮೈಬಿಸಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ತರಕಾರಿ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲ ಮೈಥರಗುಟ್ಟುವ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲೂ ಬಾಯಿ ಚಪ್ಪರಿಸುವ ಭೋಜನ ಬಡಿಸಿದರು.

ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮದ ಋತು ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವುದು ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ ಮಧ್ಯಭಾಗದಿಂದಲೇ. ಆಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲ ಹಿಮ. ಉಷ್ಣಾಂಶ ಮೈನಸ್‌ಗೆ ಇಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ನವೆಂಬರ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಳಿಯ ಆರಂಭವಷ್ಟೇ. ಆದರೂ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ –6 ಡಿಗ್ರಿ ಸೆಲ್ಷಿಯಸ್‌ ಚಳಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಮೈ ನಡುಗಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಎಷ್ಟು ಸ್ವೆಟರ್‌, ಜಾಕೆಟ್‌ ಹಾಕಿದರೂ ಮೈ ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ದೇಹದ ಉಷ್ಣಾಂಶ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಗೆಯಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅಂತಹ ಹವಾಮಾನವೇ ಆಹ್ಲಾದಕರ. ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿ ಅನುಭವಿಸಲಡ್ಡಿಯಿಲ್ಲ. ಮೊದಲ ದಿನ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದೇ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡು ಕೈಚೆಲ್ಲಿದವರು ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದರೆ ವಾತಾವರಣ ತನ್ನದಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೈಕೊಡವಿಕೊಂಡ ಮನಸ್ಸು, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೊಬಗನ್ನು ಕಣ್ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಗ್ಲೌಸ್‌ನೊಳಗಿಂದ ಬೆರಳುಗಳು ಸಣ್ಣಗೆ ಹೊರಬಂದು ಮೊಬೈಲ್‌ ಮೇಲೆ ಸರಿದು, ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ವೇತವರ್ಣದ ಗುಡ್ಡಗಳನ್ನು ಸೆರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ನ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸೊಬಗನ್ನೂ ಸವಿದು, ಲಿದ್ದರ್‌ ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು ‘ಐ ಲೈವ್ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌’ ಎಂಬ ಬರಹದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸೆಲ್ಫಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಾಗ, ಅದರ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಇರುವ ‘ಬೈಸರನ್‌ ಹುತಾತ್ಮರ ಸ್ಮಾರಕ’ ಇರುವುದು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಣ್ಣು ತೇವವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರದ್ದಾಂಜಲಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ, ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ಗೆ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳುವಾಗ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಭಾರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂದೊಂದು ದಿನ ಬಂದಾಗ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಸಂತಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿರಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಆಶಾಭಾವ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ. ‘ರಿಯಲಿ, ಐ ಲವ್‌ ಪೆಹಲ್ಗಾಮ್‌...’
