Bengaluru: 100 lakes in the state are being developed in an environment-friendly manner and are being developed as 'Hasiru Sarovara (GREEN LAKES)' with biological barriers without installing concrete and pavers.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department is now adopting the same sequence of construction of lakes and their management in the past. A plan has started to keep the lakes as natural lakes, away from modern facilities and make them eco-friendly at low cost. In August, 100 lakes in 31 districts of the state will start to work become 'GREEN LAKES'.

Apart from spending crores on the lakes, the main objective of the 'Hasiru Sarovar' campaign is to save the lakes naturally, without using concrete, and develop them at a low cost. This campaign is being implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA).

A biological fence is constructed around the lake. High and low height plants are planted in two rows. Thorn plants such as safflower, which were grown as hedges in the past, are grown between two rows of trees. Saplings are suggested to be planted by the nurseries of the Federation of Gram Panchayat Level Self Help Societies formed by the National Livelihoods Organization (NRLM) at each taluk level.

The lake bed is reinforced with soil using less stones. Plants like wadelia are planted to prevent soil erosion on the slopes. Interlocking pavers cannot be installed on the banks of the lake. Emphasis is planned to increase groundwater level along with conservation of biodiversity.

Five lakes each in Davangere, Dharwad, Hassan and Haveri districts, four lakes each in Chitradurga, Gadag and two lakes each in Kalaburagi, Udupi and Vijayanagar districts, and in the remaining 22 districts each three lakes have been decided to be converted into 'GREEN LAKES'.

'Green Lake Campaign' was organized in 'Amrita Sarovar' programme. This is the work to save lakes as lakes. Ananda Malligadavada, who has developed dozens of lakes naturally, is advising the project. 100 lakes will start work to be as 'GREEN LAKES' in August," said Shilpa Nag, Commissioner of Rural Development Commission.

 Method of implementation

  •  Planting of locally available plants such as wadelia on the inner slope of the lake
  •  Inflow, outflow area development

  •  Construction of pits to prevent silting
  •  Scientifically desilted, biological fence around the lake
  •  Plantation of plants like banyan, peepal, neem etc. under Koti Vriksha Abhiyan
  •  A sloping area for drinking water for cattle

 Advantages

  •  * Rejuvenation of lakes at low cost
  •  * Increasing the water storage capacity of the lake
  •  * Preventing encroachment
  •  * Natural beauty enhancement
