Construction of 644 new lakes in the state

Bengaluru: The state has constructed 644 new lakes under the central government's 'Amrita Sarovar' scheme as part of the Independence Amrita Mahotsava. More than four crore cubic meters of water has been collected in an area of ​​more than 11 thousand acres.

In the 'Amrita Sarovar' project for comprehensive development of lakes, the construction of new lakes has also been undertaken. In this, Belgaum district has got the first position and has created 75 lakes in an area of ​​493 acres. Then comes Hassan. 60 lakes have been constructed in an area of ​​6,714 acres.

In addition to reviving the dead lakes as new lakes in the revenue records, new construction work has been undertaken where there is a possibility of water storage. New lakes have been built to collect water from the hills, including drinking water, water for animals, shared by villages and villages and to help biodiversity.

Rejuvenation of 1,963 lakes: 

At least 75 lakes in each district were to be rejuvenated under the Amrita Sarovar project. However, the state has set a target of 204 lakes. Thus, 6,324 lakes have been identified, in which work has started on 4,738 lakes and 1963 lakes have been rehabilitated. Due to this, the storage of more than one crore cubic meters (1,14,69,183 cubic meters) of water has increased. With this achievement, the state is now at the 4th position in the country's ranking list.

If there is an acre lake area, its water storage capacity should be increased to 10 thousand cubic meters. Like the 'Amrita Sarovar' project, local people including freedom fighters, their families, Padma awardees are engaged in the restoration works of the lakes.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, Minor Irrigation Department, Watershed Development Department, Agriculture, National Highways Authority of India, Railway Department are implementing the project. Mahatma Gandhi NREGA, 15th Finance Commission, Watershed Development etc. have got grants for many projects. Further Corporate Public Responsibility Fund (CSR Fund) has been utilized.

Expenditure of ₹679.25 crore: 

The state government has so far spent ₹679.25 crore on comprehensive development of lakes. All the projects have to be completed by August 15, 2023. Shilpa Nag, state nodal officer of the 'Mission Amrita Sarovar' project said that the national flag will be hoisted in all the newly constructed and revived lakes on August 15.

Highest in Tumkur

The highest number of 443 lakes have been identified in Tumkur district of the state under the Amrita Sarovar project. But in this the number of lakes where work has started is 202. Only 85 lakes are developed. In Hassan, which is in second place, 84 lakes out of 343 lakes have been developed. 48 out of 298 lakes are developed in Kalaburagi, 88 out of 284 in Belgaum, 75 out of 274 in Ramanagara. Chamarajanagar, Udupi, Bangalore, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu districts are in the last five positions in lake development work.

There are more than 33 thousand lakes under the purview of Rural Development and Panchayat Department. Comprehensive development of lakes is being done in Amrita Sarovar project. Then a water user association was formed for each lake to manage these. After spending so much money, it is everyone's responsibility to protect it," said Rural Development Commissioner Shilpa Nag, who is the state nodal officer of the 'Mission Amrita Sarovar' project.‌
