NGT Norm: only 8 out of 31 STPs are with in parameters

Bengaluru: Out of the 31 STPs managed by BWSSP in the city, only 8 are treating waste water as per norms, while the remaining STPs are exceeding the norms of National Green Bench (NGT) and State Pollution Control Board, according to a report by ActionAid.

After 45 days of monitoring the statistics of STPs recorded on the BWSSB website itself, the agency has prepared a study report on them. 1042.5 million liters of waste water is treated daily in 31 STPs. Studied from Nov 1 to Dec 15, 2022. Six criteria are compared to assess the quality of water treatment.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Potential Hydrogen (pH), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Ammonical Nitrogen and Total Nitrogen levels were studied following measurement. Raghavendra B.Pachchapur, Program Manager of ActionAid, said that except for 8 STPs, these standards are not being followed.

The TSS level should be less than 10 mg per liter as per Pollution Control Board standards. But BWSSB has set this level at 20 mg. Similarly, if the pH level is set at 6.5–9 instead of 6.5–8.5, there is no measurement of coliform, the human-animal waste that causes many diseases.

What SPTs are like?:

Only STPs at Doddabele, Cubbonpark, yelemallappa Chetty, Mylasandra, Kempambudhi, Rajacanal (New), Agar and Hulimavi are following all the norms.

Kengeri, Rajacanal (old), Hebbala, K&C Valley-30 and 218 are not providing sample data.

The data of STPs in Yalahanka TTP, Halasur, Bellandur Amani lakes is alarming and full of misinformation. Jakkuru STP is in very poor condition. Exceeds all standards.

All norms of National Green Bench (NGT), Pollution Control Board should be followed. It should be monitored by Pollution Control Board. The study suggested that the treated water discharged to the lake and other areas should be of the same standard.

'A fish is not worth living...'

BWSSB says water is discharged from its waste water treatment plants (STPs) into the lakes. The word people use is far away. At least the water in the lake is enough for the fish to survive. With such a purpose, we have studied the water flowing from STPs by collecting the data available on their website. A copy of this will also be submitted to BWSSB, Urban Development Department, State Pollution Control Board, ActionAid's Raghavendra B. Pachchapur said.

Upgradation will be done...

Many of the STPs of BWSSB are very old and cannot meet the norms laid down now. Thus, work is being done to upgrade the STPs to meet the NGT norms, informed Gangadhar, STP Department, BWSSB.

Bengaluru: BWSSB and BBMP have finally yielded to the demands of the chairman, members, officers and locals of Kodigehalli village panchayat of Yeshavantpur area and have proposed to set up STPs to prevent sewage from flowing into Kodigehalli and Kannally lake.

Kodigehalli and Kannalli lakes, which are adjacent to Sir M. Visveshvaraiah BDA Layout, are under the jurisdiction of BBMP. Sewage and waste from Herohalli, Bydarahalli, Doddagollarhatti, Balaji layout, Anjananagar and BEL layout are being collected in these lakes. Locals and village panchayats have appealed to BWSSB many times that this should be stopped.

The lakes in Kodigehalli and Kannalli are smelling bad and causing trouble to the residents of the surrounding areas. Polluted water has turned black, mosquitoes and vermin have increased. The surrounding well and Borewell water is also getting polluted. Kommaghatta and Ramsandra lakes are also getting polluted and the chemical from here is entering Bairamangala lake. Repeated letters have been written to BBMP, Pollution Control Board and BESSB asking them to take immediate action. Now it has received a response and the water board has decided to install an STP with a treatment capacity of 3 million litres.

The water board has provided drinking water facility and sewerage system for Visveshvaraiah layouts. Kodigehalli and Kannalli lakes were getting a lot of pollution, and the locals had requested the Kodigehalli village panchayat to stop it. Thus, the Water board has decided to construct STP. Constructing a unit in an area of one and a half acres, arrangements are being made to allow only treated water to flow into these lakes,'' said K.N. Rajiv, Chief Engineer, Planning Department, BWSSB.

The STP will be set up at a cost of ₹10 crore under Cauvery Phase 5 project with financial assistance from JICA. The project will be completed in a year and a half,' he said.

Kodigehalli and Kannalli lakes development have not been taken up by BBMP for development at present. However, we are supporting the water board work undertaken to prevent sewage spillage," said Vijayakumar Haridas, Chief Engineer of the lakes division.

Construction waste to Kannalli lake

Environmental activist Goudaiah has written several letters to the BBMP, Pollution Control Board since a year saying that construction debris, solid waste and meat waste are being dumped into the Kannalli lake. Responding to this, the BBMP directed the Kodigehalli village panchayat officer to take action to prevent such waste from going into the lake. But no action so far. Gowdaiah complained that the Pollution Control Board had conducted an inspection but no action had been taken.
