Census of trees not done in the 'Green City'

Despite the millions of saplings planted in the Bengaluru every year, the temperature does not decrease

Kere Manjunath

Bengaluru: Another Environment Day is being celebrated in 'Green City' Bengaluru. Hundreds of organisations including government departments are planting lakhs of saplings. However, even after the High Court notice, the census of trees and plants in the city has not yet started.

Take a census of the trees in the capital Bengaluru, known as the city of gardens, the green city, and make it public- In 2019, the High Court directed the BBMP, to start the enumeration process in three months, but so far only poilet work has been done. The report has been prepared in Eight volumes and the BBMP currently has information on 46,593 trees.

BBMP in collaboration with the Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST) has conducted a tree census at a cost of around ₹4 crore. However, it is not comprehensive. Even though the forest officials of BBMP are saying that they will carry out census work in many ways including new technology and app, nothing has been implemented for four years. In the census, there will be all the information about the species of trees, their use and their impact on the environment. Dattatreya T. Devare of Bangalore Environment Trust, who requested the High Court to order the census of trees, informed that this will facilitate the cultivation of saplings in nurseries.

Trees are being axed for development works. There is a law that saplings should be planted and nurtured instead. However, there are no examples of trees being cut down and saplings planted around them when massive works like our metro are done. Showing the record of plantation in outskirts of city or forest area. This is of no use. If a tree is cut for any work, saplings should be planted around it, on the side of the road and nurtured and turned into trees,' he said.

 20 lakh?:

'Millions of saplings are planted in Bengaluru every year. Especially on the occasion of Environment Day, thousands of organisations including government departments, BBMP, BDA, BWSSB, BMRCL also plant saplings. However, the number of trees under BBMP is not more than 20 lakh. Therefore, the temperature of the city continues to rise," said IISc Prof. Ramachandra expressed concern.

 How much is left?:

On the occasion of 'Environment Day' campaign in the name of ``Koti Vriksha'' and ``Laksha Sasi'', they get publicity that they have planted saplings. However, no one can see how many of those saplings are left next year. There are a lot of people who have propagated by planting saplings in the last five or six years. Although 50% of the saplings remain, the city should have at least 50 lakh trees by this time. In reality it is not. Environmental activist Ramprasad opined that it is not only about planting a sapling, but also about nurturing it and turning it into a tree.

Decision soon for Census: DCF

The census of plants and trees under BBMP has been carried out in a 'pilot project'. However, the enumeration process has not been done completely. Sarina Sikkaligar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, BBMP Forest Division, said that talks have been held with many organisations including GKVK, and after getting permission from the government, the work of enumeration of plants and trees will be carried out.

'Appeal again to the High Court'

Although the High Court has given an order in 2019, the tree census has not started till now. As per the Tree Preservation Act, census has to be done. However, BBMP officials are not paying attention to this. We have inquired many times. Some reasons are given. Even today the exact plan implementation process has not started. Therefore, we will appeal to the High Court again," said Dattatreya T. Devare of Bengaluru Environment Trust.

2 trees per house as per Act

According to the rules of the Karnataka Tree Preservation Act, there should be two trees per 222 sq m (2,389 sq ft) residential plot in urban areas. 892 square meters (9,600 square feet) of building-sites should have three, then four trees in area. Industrial and Institutional premises should have 25 trees per hectare.

"Each person should have eight trees for the environment to be balanced. However, in Bengaluru with a population of 1.30 crore, there is one tree for every seven people. In Chandigarh and Gandhinagar there are four plants per person, in Nashik there are two plants per person,” said Indian Institute of Science Prof. T.V. Ramachandra said.

Concretization is fatal for green zone

A 'legal wand' is needed to restore the city's eco-friendly reputation.

Concretization is fatal for green zone

Kere Manjunath

Bengaluru: It is always said that Bangalore, which was famous as a garden city and an air-conditioned city, will be brought back to the same condition. Plans are also made. But implementation is limited to concretization only.

Hundreds of crores are spent annually on the development of lakes and gardens. In projects to save and grow the environment, millions of saplings are planted every year, which is limited to publication. Because, if so many lakh saplings were planted every year, the city would have been full of trees.

Further, tens of crores are being spent on the development of each lake. Here more attention is being given to concrete construction instead of allowing for biodiversity. In the past, there was nothing else except that the lake was used as a connecting bridge. Now concrete is being used for the walking track around the lake. Crores are being spent on the construction of buildings and high-tech facilities. However, there are no facilities for birds and animals in the lakes which are a place of biodiversity. There is no space for trees.

A civil engineer is the standard for the development of a lake, while eco-friendly facilities are negligible. This also applies to gardens. Furniture is preferred over trees in gardens. Citizens allege that neither the government nor the politicians have any hindsight in cutting trees and planting them.

A lot of work needs to be done in pollution control. The task is to measure air and water pollution and publish it. Responsibility should be assigned to this board, which has been limited to this for so many years. If there is any kind of pollution, the board should be held responsible for it. Such an expectation needs the official seal of the government. Otherwise, environmental activists demand that there should be an order by law.

Environmental impact assessment should be mandatory

Bangalore's urbanization has had a significant impact on biodiversity. Uncontrolled real estate growth and development of overconcretization in infrastructure such as roads have affected the environment. The Bangalore Development Authority is converting land in villages around the city into barangays to accommodate the growing population. Large-scale infrastructure projects such as road widening, metro rail and new flyovers are also contributing to habitat loss. These projects involve cutting down trees and loss of green cover, mostly affecting animals and birds.

Lakes, gardens and trees are critical to the sustainable growth of the city and its population. While housing and other infrastructure are needed, sustainable development is needed to mitigate micro climate change. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) should be mandatory for all upcoming and current projects to ensure that we regain the Garden City title that we have lost in the name of development. A master plan should be developed continuously every year. List the ward-wise land-use changes in the city and help create a people-friendly climate.

Vinod Jacob, Chief Manager, Namma Bangalore Foundation

Development should not be life-threatening

Bangalore has forgotten the environment in the fast pace of development and people's representatives are giving more preference to concrete. Marking the boundaries of the city in four directions, giving importance to water and clean air and showing the important lesson of making it a garden city is again studied and implemented with interest and earnestness but Bendakalur will become a decrepit city. Otherwise tomorrow the next generation will curse us. The Vrishabhavati River has gone without a name and has become Kengeri Mori. Thousands of lakes in the river basins have been destroyed, the extinct lakes are filled with sewage and the smell of disaster is spreading everywhere. Lined with wooden roads, the cold memory is gone.

Emphasis should be placed on maintaining the urban forests, redeveloping the royal canals and filling the lakes with fresh water. Like recovery. When new barangays are built in the outer zones of the city, 50 percent of the budget should be forest. There are ten popular ways to reduce traffic congestion and need to be implemented. Environmental Management and Control Boards should stop the works which are harmful to the environment. Life is only if there is life. Development should not be life-threatening.

Dr. T.J. Renuka Prasad, Emeritus Professor of Geology, Bangalore University

The creation of heat islands is fatal

Lakes in the city are being developed at a cost of hundreds of crores and are being built as thermal islands. Instead of fostering biodiversity, concretization is increasing. There is no standard for the development of lakes. A technical approval committee consisting of environmental experts i.e. geologists, hydrologists, limnologists, toxicologists and civil engineers is essential. The Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority should take steps to implement what is approved here. All should be empowered to run under the supervision of this authority.

No lake development work shall be undertaken without a Detailed Plan Report (DPR) and approval of the Technical Approval Committee. There should be a system where all these details are freely available to citizens through a website. Justice N.K. According to the Patil report, district and state level lake committees should be formed and responsible for monitoring. No concrete development including road and flyover should take place in the lake and buffer zone. To reduce the temperature in Bangalore, the environment has to be preserved. Instead of showing everything in the book, only eco-friendly developments should be undertaken.

Ramprasad, Friends of Lakes

  • Water, water, water… everyone needs water. When there is no water its devastating, when there is water, usage is irresponsible. Amidst this irony, there are practitioners who have made water conservation their daily routine. Do you know?
  • Lots of people plants, pose to lot for photos too. But ignored nurturing. In these scenarios, there are people who committed to nature. They fight to save plants and trees. Those don't come to limelight...
  • Who built the Dharmambudhi lake that used to provide drinking water to Bengaluru, now it is a bus stand?
  • Tell me, who doesn't know Bengaluru Karaga? But the original place which caused the creation of this is not seen today. Do you know that place?
  • Hundreds of crores have been spent on the development of Bangalore lakes. But, all that is in it is dirty water. So, where did all these hundreds of crores go?
  • What have they done for environmental protection?
  • There is no water bill in his house.. Do you know why?

Let’s know all this from Green Talk.

Green Talk is the information hive of such dozens of achievements and surprises.

Green Talk… This is a matter of nature.

Color Ganesha: A loophole for the environment

Kere Manjunath

Yellow color crown mixed with gold, red color dhoti, green or blue color shalya, pink color for ears, reddish pink color for trunk, black color for vahan rat... do you know? Having said all this, it is needless to say that we are talking about Ganesha idol. It is true that such a Ganesha idol gives pleasure. But, do you know that this idol itself has bad effects on health?

Ganesha came and ate the nut-cake. Fell into a small lake, rose up into a big lake... This is the song about Ganesha... It needs to be changed today...

Color Ganesha: A loophole for the environment

Ganesha came full of color, wrapped in plastic and fell into the lake, released color poison into the water, hurt health...

Bengaluru's situation has to be sung like this. Because there are few remaining lakes in Bangalore. After the Ganapan Murti, which has a poisonous color in it, is discharged, the poisonous water enters the ground water. It is also connected to the house through a borewell. It not only affects health but also brings dozens of diseases. In addition, environmental pollution also increases.

Ganapa, most loved by children, is worshiped by people of all ages. During Ganapati festival, lakhs of idols are offered special pooja in homes and public places. In this, most of the idols continue to mourn. The reason for this glitter is dozens of colors. Apart from natural colors, artificial colors are used in idols. This pollutes the environment. These chemical elements are also included in the pollution and are being added to the human and plant species through water, air. This poisonous substance not only causes many diseases in humans but also has the ability to destroy plants and trees.

Ganapati made of clay was worshiped in earlier times. A high-tech touch was given as the lifestyle changed. That is why the clay Ganapati was given color. Didn't care about the chemical elements in it. As these Ganesha idols are mostly worshiped and discharged, the chemical content in the ground water has been increasing in recent years. This is revealed by a study conducted by Ecoganapati.net.

Nowadays fiber, grass, cloth, paper, wood, thermocol, plaster of Paris are used in making idols. Along with these, very harmful artificial colors are also being used. Most of these materials are insoluble in water. Instead they create pollution in the lake or pond. Plaster of Paris and artificial colors release toxic chemicals into the water.

About the idols that are dissolved during the Ganesha festival in Sanki lake. Manjunath, Pramod Subbarao and Harish Bhatt have studied. The problem caused to the environment by colored idols has been revealed in detail. On the website called ecoganapa.net, he has explained about the harm to the environment and its benefits due to colored ganapas. The aim is to create awareness about the use of natural colored or clay idols instead of worshiping colored Ganapan idols. He has collected the opinion of many Swamijis about this.

A painted idol of Ganapan about 2 feet tall emits two grams of lead. So, from 5.1 lakh idols that are more than 2 feet, that much lead can be released into the lake and the environment. How much more can it affect groundwater and health? Think once.

Pollution only by Ganesha?

Lakes in Bangalore are polluted with sewage water. Can't even lay hands there. What happens if Ganesha idols are left for one day of the year? There is no shortage of people asking this question. It depends on what kind of Ganapa idol you worship and dissolve.

There is no harm to the environment with idols made only from clay. Idols made of artificial colors, plaster of Paris, grass, cloth, wood do not dissolve in lakes. It not only releases chemical elements into the water but also creates pollution. To see this, one has to go to the lakes a few days after the idol is dissolved. There, idol remains are seen on the bank. There is concern that we have worshiped this idol. Therefore, it is our ritual to worship and dissolve the idol of eco-friendly Ganesha. We forgot that. So we are calling for pollution.

 Eco-friendly Ganap, traditional details tomorrow...
