35 percent decline in lake storage capacity

Bengaluru: The water capacity of lakes in the city is declining under the guise of development. The storage capacity of the lakes to retain water has reduced by 35%, eliminating the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
Expensive 'high-tech facilities' such as increasing the level of lakes, gardens for ornamental plants, exercise equipment, gazebos, stone carving sites etc. are being done. As a result, 2,316 acres of water in 190 lakes of Bangalore has been destroyed.
In recent years, when it rains in the city, the lakes are overflowing and there is a flood situation. The main reason for this is low water storage capacity. Besides being filled with waste and silt, the water area is being reduced for beautification during the development of lakes. Thus, out of 190 lakes in the city, 62 lakh square meters of water area is missing.
The lakes in the area, which were 'pre-flooded' during the heavy rains last year, have lost the maximum storage capacity. 615 acres of 51 lakes in Mahadevpur zone have no storage capacity. The next place is Bommanahalli zone. 476 acres of water in 43 lakes have been destroyed. People in both these zones were devastated by the floods.
Even a small lake is being spent four hundred crores, walking track, jogging track, cycle path are being drained and soil is being poured. The question of whether such a development is necessary is given as an excuse that the locals want it.
Beautification works are being done in more lakes than what should be done to save biodiversity and increase water capacity. Crores are being spent for this. However, due to such unnecessary work of covering the water storage capacity with soil, the locals are not aware of the problem in the near future. According to experts, even the citizens who want 'high-tech facilities' in the lake should know that if the water in the lake does not stop, water will enter the houses in Bangalore, which is a concrete city.
Like an ornament to the Dead body!
It is enough to do things like saving the lakes according to biodiversity. However, Ramprasad of Friends of Lakes expressed regret that in the name of development, unnecessary works have been carried out and are being carried out in the name of beautification of lakes under BBMP.
The walking tracks in the lakes are being unnecessarily widened and are being made into gardens with mexigrass and ornamental plants. J.P. Mattikere. As a park, Challakere is being renamed as Sangollirayanna park and the existence of the lake is being removed. He complained that there is a rumor that something can be done if it is a park.
'Development work like DPR'
As per the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR) under the BBMP, the development of the lakes is ongoing. The DPR submitted to the Lake Conservation and Development Authority contains all kinds of information. Similarly, building, equipment, island, walkway will be constructed," said Vijayakumar Haridas, chief engineer of BBMP Lakes Department.
